Busyness – it’s an epidemic. I feel like all we hear anymore is everyone talking about how busy life is. I remember years ago hearing a sermon about busyness that really stuck with me. The gist of it was basically that we all have the same twenty-four hours in a day but how we choose to use them is completely up to us. We can cram those hours full of every possible activity or we can keep things to a minimum and make sure to have time for what’s really important – relationships.
Does anyone else feel like that doesn’t happen much anymore?
I’m definitely not saying that we shouldn’t be involved in anything or that kids shouldn’t be involved in outside activities. Those types of things are important too and can create a very well-rounded individual. I’m just saying that maybe making wiser choices about the activities we choose to be involved with can create a much happier and lower-stress life.
Ask yourself these questions: When was the last time you went out on a date with your spouse? When was the last time you had dinner as a family? When was the last time you hung out with a friend? If you can’t answer any of those with a recent date, you might be too busy!
I almost think that busyness has become an idol in our culture. I think people feel like they aren’t meeting the status quo if they aren’t busy all the time. It’s like it’s a badge of honor to be able to say that you’re too busy for something! I definitely have some days that are busier than others and I just don’t have a lot of time for anything but buckling down and getting some work done, but I try very hard to make those days few and far between and make relationships more important than anything else. After all, if we don’t have relationships, what’s even the point? Just to work our life away?
I know that I want my life to be different. I don’t want my life to be a slave to a schedule and being busy. I want to have time to enjoy life, to enjoy family, to enjoy friendships. I choose to manage my schedule rather than let my schedule manage me. I am extremely blessed to have a job* that allows me flexibility and the ability to set my own schedule so that makes it a little easier for me than it might be for some but it CAN be done. I promise!
Would you like to join me in putting busyness aside? 😉
